Halloween is over… (plus a review of KAIRO)

Published by sayonaracinema at 11:38 am under Asian Movies, Horror Movies Edit This

Halloween may be over, but that does not mean it is time to put horror films on the back burner. Remember to keep up the good fight and giving the horror genre the respect it deserves.

Today’s film recommendation is…

KAIRO (2001) People all around Tokyo are mysteriously dying, and just as mysteriously disappearing. When Michi discovers her friend dead one day, she vows to understand what is happening all around her. Across town, Ryosuke is taking his first steps toward internet capability, and stumbles across a bizarre website, filled with webcams broadcasting depressed people looking for help. As Tokyo slowly transforms into a ghost town, Michi and Ryosuke..s curiosity cross paths, and together they are able to discover the horrifying truth that has been spreading out all around them.

Equally well known as PULSE (and remade in America under this name) in the film community, it raises just that as it slowly churns for two hours, until the feeling of dread on screen almost seeps out to be absorbed by those watching it. Director and writer Kyoshi Kurosawa spins this incredible and truly horrific story, which emits pure emotional fright. There is zero gore in the film, and while a few shocks are spread out in the story, it is the soul of the entire film that will draw you in to keep you, forever, and ever, and ever.
